During the month our study plan is to select a vegetative product as herbs, vegetables, fruits or spices to research.

Individually our goal, is to identify all related benefits derived

from each selection. You may obtain the facts from text, online, journals and speaking with professionals in their related fields to include gardeners, landscapers and professionals. It is important to get their permission to quote them, to enter their information into our collection of data. Your submission will be part of our permanent record, available by request to all of our Team Detectives.

DETECTIVE BROTHER MARLON'S HERBAL REPORT: ROSEMARY

Rosemary plant has many beneficial uses. It enhances the memory by improving circulation. Fifteen drops of Rosemary can also be added as an essential oil to bath water to ease tension and boost spirit. Rosemary tea can be used as a conditioning hair rinse, by adding vinegar to the mix can serve to treat dandruff. If you are pregnant you will want to avoid large doses except as advised by a qualified herbalist. Also do not apply
Rosemary when experiencing a headache and migraine when the skin or temperature is elevated. Some other uses for Rosemary includes reduces depression, poor digestion, sore throats and hair loss. It is recommended to take rosemary with chamomile for stress related headaches. May improve properties of other known herbal medicines to improve cold and poor circulation to the head, strengthens the brain and improves the quality and strength of hair. Two cups of rosemary tea prevents hair loss and also re-stimulates hair growth after chemotherapy, according to research.
Recipe:
Rosemary Vinegar take 1 oz. rosemary and 2 pints cider vinegar. Leave the rosemary to steep in the vinegar for two weeks and shake occasionally. After two weeks strain, bottle, label and date. Use 1-2 dessert spoons in the final rinsing water when washing hair. For dandruff, massage rosemary vinegar thoroughly into the scalp 20 minutes before washing.
Preparation:
For drying, healthy branches should be cut from the rosemary plant and remove any dry or diseased leaves. Shake the plant gently to remove any insects, rinse with cool water pat dry. Wet herbs will mold and rot. Remove the lower leaves along the bottom inch or so of the branch. Bundle 4-6 branches together and tie in a bunch. The bundles will shrink as they dry. Make small bundles if you are trying to dry herbs with a high water content. Punch or cut several holes in a paper bag and place the herb upside down in the bag. Gather the ends of the bag around the bundle and tie closed. Make sure that the herbs are not crowded. Hang the bag upside down in a warm and airy room. After the herbs have dried, store them air tight containers, jars or ziploc bags. Then label and date the containers. The herbs will retain more flavor if you store the leaves. Crush them when you are ready to use them. Discard any herbs that show any signs of mold. Place the container in a cool dry place away from sunlight. they are best if used within a year as they will lose color and flavor.
Rosemary is an evergreen or perennial shrub with fragrance and needle like leaves. The name Rosemary
comes from the latin word Rosmarinus. It is best grown in light soil and full sun. Rosemary can grow up to 1.8m or 6 ft but commonly grows up to 1m or 3 ft. Rosemary is a plant that can withstand droughts. It is also native to Mediterranean. Prefers light soil and full sun. A sandy soil will fully satisfy its feeding needs. However it is tolerant to most soil conditions as long as they are not water logged. The plant will withstand severe frost if conditions are not windy and wet. April is the ideal time to plant Rosemary. Water well if conditions are dry and very little care is required throughout the year. Feed once a month with liquid fertilizer from April to October. Trim the side stems to keep the plant to the desired size. The best time to trim the plant is just after it has flowered. A strong stake can be used for support in the winter. The seeds can take up to two months to grow. Also Rosemary usually grows extremely well in large pots. The pots need to be reasonably deep because rosemary is a deep rooting herb. The pots should be filled with 20% sharp sand and 60% standard potting compost. Container grown plants are more likely to be affected by severe frost so move the containers or pots close to the house walls in the winter.
Culinary:
Rosemary, has been used in cooking soups, meats and has a unique flavor.
Rosemary essence, can mix well with oil as canola or sunflower to apply on the skin to relieve muscular aches and pain.
